Performance and Productivity Breakthroughs Enabled by Globally Shared Memory
Today's SGI Altix technology makes it possible to build systems with very large global shared memories, scaling to 512 processors in a single instance of Linux with shared memory up to 6 TB. Such systems enable full datasets and complete system simulations to be resident in memory and thus avoid the show-stopping problems of the "I/O wall." This paper describes the value of these systems as demonstrated in both system-level metrics as well as a broad range of applications, such as database, bioinformatics, crash and structural analysis, chemistry, reservoir simulation and others.
